Gretchen and Dakota’s DC cherry blossom engagement photos were nothing short of magical. Instead of the iconic Tidal Basin cherry blossoms, we chose to do their session at the Catholic University of America, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. Not only was the campus bursting with blooming trees, but it was also a meaningful spot. Gretchen studied at the School of Music at CUA, so this session felt like a beautiful full-circle moment.
We started right outside the School of Music building, where towering cherry blossom trees shade a little brick courtyard. As pink petals rained down, it felt like a scene straight out of a movie. Gretchen and Dakota were so relaxed and joyful. The entire moment had that dreamy springtime glow that every photographer hopes for during cherry blossom season in DC.
As a Northern Virginia wedding photographer, I’m always looking for session spots that combine beauty with personal meaning. Catholic University absolutely delivered in this session! After the courtyard, we made our way to the nearby Mary Garden. It’s a peaceful circular space surrounded by cherry blossom trees. During golden hour, the light there is truly something special. Soft light filtered through the branches as Gretchen and Dakota laughed and twirled around beneath the blooms.
We then stumbled upon a small grove of magnolia trees, their purple-toned flowers creating a romantic frame around the couple. Gretchen’s joy was contagious, and Dakota’s steady smile never faded. These two have such a sweet connection. The garden-like setting was the perfect place for DC cherry blossom engagement photos.
We ended the session at the grand steps of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. By some perfect stroke of timing, the church was closed and there were no guards on duty. We had the entire facade to ourselves. It was quiet, peaceful, and breathtakingly beautiful. The towering architecture, the soft light, and the sweet calm at the end of a joyful session all came together to create a picture-perfect ending.
This session was extra special for me because I’ve had the honor of documenting Gretchen and Dakota’s journey over time. I photographed their proposal last year at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens (another garden setting that was full of life and beauty!). Getting to see their love grow and capturing it again in such a meaningful and seasonal setting was such a gift.
I’m so excited to be photographing their wedding in the city later this year. If their DC cherry blossom engagement photos at Catholic University are any indication, their big day is going to be stunning, heartfelt, and full of love!
