Some engagement sessions feel like a perfect snapshot of who a couple is together. Hillary and Scott’s Maryland engagement photos at Waredeca Brewing Company were exactly that: meaningful to them, wrapped in peak Maryland fall color, and lit by the kind of golden hour glow that makes everything feel magical.
They chose a brewery not because it’s “a photo spot,” but because it’s their kind of place… Peaceful, rural, and slow in the best way. And honestly? It was the perfect setting for Maryland engagement photos that felt personal, relaxed, and honest.
Hillary and Scott met online through Bumble – something Hillary hadn’t even heard of until just a couple days before. She told me it felt like Divine Providence, and after hearing their story, it’s easy to see why.
When Hillary described Scott’s proposal, it was beautiful in a quiet, steady way:
“We had an unexpected free weekend. Scott and I went to a new winery in Southern Maryland. It was a really hot day, but we decided to sit outside anyway. It started with a sweet conversation, where Scott underscored how important I was to him, and I affirmed the same for me. Then he said something about timing, and he reached for his pocket. He pulled out the ring and got down on one knee. I cried and almost forgot to say ‘yes’. It was very sweet.”
Next October, they’ll celebrate their wedding day with what they’re looking forward to most: their Nuptial Mass, and time with the people who have shaped their lives. Both Hillary and Scott have children from previous marriages, and they’re excited to bring their families together. And I’m excited to witness it as their Catholic wedding photographer!
Waredeca Brewing Company is less than an hour from Washington, DC, and it has that peaceful rural atmosphere that makes you exhale as soon as you arrive. There’s a horse barn on the property, open fields stretching out behind you, and plenty of space to wander without feeling rushed or crowded.
Hillary and Scott have enjoyed dates here before, and that made the session feel especially natural. When a location carries real memories for a couple, it changes everything. Because the smiles aren’t just for the camera – they’re for each other.
If you’ve ever considered brewery engagement photos, this is the kind of setting that works best: open space, magical light, and room to simply be together.
(A quick note for couples: breweries and private properties often require permission for photography. It’s always wise to ask in advance – good etiquette and good relationships matter.)
We scheduled their session to make the most of peak fall color and the warm light that shows up in the last stretch of day. That’s one of my favorite things about fall sessions in Maryland: the foliage is already doing something spectacular, and golden hour adds a softness that feels like a fairytale.
I recommend starting roughly two hours before sunset so there’s time to warm up, explore, and still end the photo session before the light disappears.
We wandered the property chasing fall color, open fields, and pockets of light – then ended where it felt most “them”: on the patio, raising a glass to the season they’re in.
Hillary wore a casual yet sophisticated strapless denim dress that felt effortless and polished – perfect for the relaxed fall atmosphere of a Maryland brewery. Scott wore a nice shirt with corduroy pants, which added texture and richness without feeling too formal.
Fall engagement outfits photograph beautifully when you lean into:
The result: outfits that looked like them, matched the setting, and kept the focus where it belongs – on their connection.
Hillary and Scott told me they weren’t naturally comfortable in front of the camera at first – and that is so normal. Almost every single client says the same thing to me at some point! Most couples need a little time to settle in, breathe, and realize they don’t have to “perform.” (That warm-up period is real – and it’s part of the process.)
What I loved most was how quickly they leaned in. They trusted me with gentle direction and posing, and then – once they realized how doable it was – they started making suggestions of their own.
Scott even took the lead on a few posing ideas after insisting he had “no experience” in front of the camera… and those became some of my favorite images from the whole session.
That’s always the goal: not perfection – just comfort, connection, and photos that feel like you.
This session made me even more excited for Hillary and Scott’s wedding day. Their love has a steadiness to it – one that feels genuinely joyful and deeply reverent. Next October, photographing their Nuptial Mass and the celebration that follows will be such an honor.
Hillary and Scott – thank you for trusting me with this season. Your engagement session felt peaceful, genuine, and full of grace.
If you’re planning a wedding in Maryland, Northern Virginia, or the DC area and you want engagement photos that feel natural, guided, and meaningful, I’d love to connect.
Golden hour is usually the most flattering – warm light, softer shadows, and a romantic glow. I recommend starting about two hours before sunset so you have time to warm up and catch the best light.
Most sessions run about an hour, depending on location changes and outfits. Even within an hour, it’s normal to use the first 10–15 minutes to get comfortable and shake off nerves.
Often yes – but breweries are private businesses, so you should ask permission in advance and follow any guidelines they provide. It’s also courteous to support the business while you’re there.
Fall is perfect for texture and layers – corduroy, denim, knits, boots, jackets, and rich neutrals. The most important thing is coordinating (not matching) and choosing tones that won’t fight with the foliage.
That’s normal. Most of my clients feel that way! The best sessions build from gentle direction into natural movement. Expect a short “warm-up” at the start, and then it gets easier as you settle in.
It depends on the location. Some parks, gardens, and high-traffic places require photography permits or have specific rules. When you hire Beauty of the Soul Studio for your wedding and engagement photos, I cover your location and permit fees so you don’t have to stress about it!
A few practical favorites: touch-up items (lip color/powder), water, comfortable shoes for walking between spots, and a jacket or shawl if the weather is chilly. I’ll help manage your bag if you need to bring along a change of clothes or other items to carry around throughout the session. If the location has entry/parking fees, it’s helpful to plan ahead.
Many couples schedule their session 2-3 months ahead – especially for peak fall foliage.
