Photographing Hannah and Peter’s Greek Orthodox wedding was a highlight of my summer season. Their wedding took place at Sts. Peter and Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church in Potomac, MD. And friends, I’m not exaggerating when I say this might be the most beautiful church I’ve ever stepped foot in, let alone photographed. As a colorful wedding photographer who adores sacred spaces, I felt like I’d walked into a living icon.
The church itself was a masterpiece – its walls and ceilings covered in vibrant iconography. It was undeniably the perfect setting for a Greek Orthodox wedding, with all the reverence, and symbolism that comes with it.
As Hannah and Peter exchanged their vows, thunder rumbled outside and the lights flickered. But the power held, the candles stayed lit, and their ceremony continued with beauty and grace. Watching them circle the altar hand in hand during the crowning ceremony – light glinting off their stefana – felt like witnessing a prayer come to life.
I’ve photographed many religious weddings, but this Sts. Peter and Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church wedding is one I’ll always remember. The setting, the ceremony, and the couple were a perfect blend of tradition and joy.
We stayed inside the sanctuary after the ceremony for portraits, and I’m still swooning over the results. The colorful artwork enveloping them, the way Peter looked at Hannah under the soft church light, the glow of the iconostasis behind them – it all came together like a sacred painting. I knew after photographing their engagement session at Green Spring Gardens Park that we’d have an amazing time with their wedding day portraits!
As a Greek Orthodox wedding photographer, one of the things I love most is how the church itself becomes a central part of the story. And here, the architecture and art didn’t just provide a backdrop. They added meaning, depth, and reverence to every photo we captured.
The storm passed just in time for golden hour, and Hannah and Peter snuck away for a few quiet portraits together outside. There was something so tender about those moments – just the two of them, newly married, soaking it all in after such a meaningful celebration.
After the ceremony, guests headed straight to the event center connected to the church for a joyful reception. And let me tell you – this wasn’t your typical “church basement” venue. The ballroom was elegant and romantic, dressed up beautifully with lush hydrangea centerpieces that made the whole room feel fresh and inviting.
Hannah and Peter kicked things off with the most fun, choreographed first dance – Peter actually choreographed it himself! Their love of dance and each other was so evident in every spin, dip, and grin. And the rest of the evening was filled with hugs, laughter, and dancing with everyone they love.
To close out the night, guests lined up outside for a bubble sendoff. It was pure magic – bubbles floating in the warm night air, the couple walking hand-in-hand into their future. A perfect ending to a day full of meaning and celebration.
This Greek Orthodox wedding at Sts. Peter and Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church was a joyful reminder of why I do what I do. Hannah and Peter’s day was filled with reverent beauty, emotional moments, and vibrant color – the kind of wedding that feels both deeply sacred and wildly joyful.
As a colorful wedding photographer who treasures tradition and storytelling, I was honored to be part of it all. Thank you, Hannah and Peter, for inviting me to witness and document the beginning of your forever.
