When Eli reached out to me about photographing his proposal to Grace, he had one big request: he wanted a location that felt iconic to Washington, DC without being packed with people. We ultimately landed on the 56 Signers Memorial inside Constitution Gardens. I now consider this spot the best place to propose in DC.
This little island tucked inside the Constitution Gardens offers a peaceful escape right off the National Mall. It still features a view of the Washington Monument, but without the heavy foot traffic of the larger memorials. The DC War Memorial is a similar option along the National Mall but off the beaten path. I photographed Christy and Kyle’s proposal there one winter! The 56 Signers Memorial is unmatched in mixing natural beauty with iconic DC views. It’s quiet and beautiful, which made it absolutely perfect for Eli and Grace.
On the day of the proposal, I arrived early and tried my best to blend in as a casual bystander. A couple of wedding parties came through while I waited. There’s never a dull moment at the Mall! Luckily they had all passed by before Eli and Grace arrived. Grace had no idea what was coming! She and Eli strolled hand-in-hand across the bridge to the island. They snapped a few selfies and enjoyed the calm beauty of the gardens together. Then, in the bright afternoon sun with weeping willow branches blowing beside them, Eli got down on one knee.
Grace’s reaction was everything. She was completely surprised, absolutely thrilled, and full of joyful tears. After she said yes, Eli pointed across the water. A group of their closest friends and family were cheering from a distance! He had arranged for a surprise picnic celebration right on the National Mall. It was even more special that Grace’s parents could be part of the celebration, as they were visiting from out of the country. Eli knew their visit was the perfect moment.
After plenty of hugs and happy tears, Grace’s friends helped her throw on some press-on nails so she could properly show off her gorgeous new ring! We took some celebratory portraits around the island and waterfront. The afternoon light was beautiful – golden and soft, filtering perfectly through the trees. The quiet of the garden made the whole moment feel even more special.
This proposal was such a sweet and thoughtful celebration of love. I feel so honored to have been a small part of it. If you’re looking for the best place to propose in DC that still feels intimate, scenic, and meaningful, the 56 Signers Memorial is truly a hidden gem. I’ll definitely be recommending it to more couples from now on!
