There’s something so magical about being part of a marriage proposal, and Dakota and Gretchen’s proposal at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens was no exception! As one of the best wedding venues in Northern Virginia, Meadowlark was the perfect spot for Dakota to pop the question.

When Dakota first reached out to me about photographing his proposal, I couldn’t wait. The gardens are always beautiful, and they offer so many scenic spots for a romantic moment like this. On the day of the proposal, Meadowlark was a bit busier than we anticipated because of a special event happening. Honestly, though, it worked out! The event acted as a great distraction while I found our agreed-upon area of the large park and waited for Dakota and Gretchen to arrive.

I have to admit—I was a little nervous. Gretchen had actually met me before. I was worried she might recognize me, especially with all my camera gear in tow! Thankfully, I managed to stay under the radar. I did my best to blend in with the crowd as just another visitor snapping photos in the gardens.

When the big moment arrived, it was absolutely perfect. Dakota led Gretchen down the path in the gardens, and got down on one knee. Gretchen’s reaction was priceless—she looked completely surprised and overjoyed. Witnessing such a genuine, heartfelt moment like that never gets old. I felt so honored to capture it for them.

After the proposal, Gretchen was still glowing with excitement, and the three of us spent some time exploring the gardens for portraits. Meadowlark’s vibrant flowers, lush greenery, and winding pathways provided the most stunning backdrops. The two of them were so natural together, laughing and smiling the entire time. It was clear just how much love they share.

A proposal at Meadowlark is truly something special. Between the natural beauty of the gardens and the joy of capturing such an important milestone, it’s one of those moments that sticks with you. Dakota and Gretchen’s proposal was everything a photographer could hope for: romantic, authentic, and full of happiness.
